Overview
We are seeking a Senior Rail Engineer / Project Manager to support a rapidly growing Transportation practice focused on freight rail and rail industrial development projects
. This role is ideal for a seasoned rail professional with strong client-facing skills who can lead multi-discipline planning and design teams on complex rail engineering projects both locally and nationwide.
The successful candidate will function as a seller/doer
, managing all aspects of rail engineering projects—from business development and proposal support through project execution, quality management, and financial performance. A primary emphasis will be placed on successfully delivering rail industrial development and design-build projects
.
- Manage all phases of railroad and rail/transit engineering projects, including business development support, scope and fee development, staffing plans, execution, quality control, and financial performance.
- Lead and coordinate multi-discipline teams of engineers, designers, and technicians in the planning, design, and analysis of rail engineering projects.
- Interface with contractors and construction teams on design-build and construction support efforts.
- Provide leadership across project safety, quality, engineering, procurement, construction coordination, environmental compliance, project controls, and stakeholder engagement.
- Promote and manage safety and health performance for project teams and subcontractors.
- Develop new client relationships and manage existing client accounts, serving as a primary point of contact for proposal and project-related activities.
- Lead internal and external project risk reviews and support contract administration efforts.
- Support contract preparation and negotiation, coordination with regulatory agencies, and establishment of critical project objectives.
- Plan, organize, and communicate project staffing needs to leadership.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced staff.
- Champion the use of emerging technologies and best practices in rail engineering and transportation planning.
- Analyze and communicate project status, risks, schedules, and costs to internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage downstream contract administration, including RFIs, submittals, change management, contract closeout, and claims mitigation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field from an accredited program.
- Minimum of 7 years of related experience
, with a strong preference for candidates whose background is focused on freight rail engineering and rail industrial development projects
. - 5+ years of experience managing or leading rail engineering or rail-related architectural projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred
. - Experience managing rail industrial development and/or design-build projects preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multi-discipline engineering teams.
- Strong client development and relationship management skills.
- Proven ability to translate client needs into defined scopes of work and successful project execution.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and perform effectively under tight deadlines.
- Strong understanding of project scheduling, budgeting, and critical path management.
- Ability to maintain a big-picture perspective while also managing critical technical and contractual details.
- Willingness to adapt to evolving client needs and expand service offerings.
- Knowledge of rail engineering methodologies, standards, and industry best practices.
- Proficiency with rail and civil design software such as Micro Station, Open Rail, GEOPAK, InRoads, or equivalent
. - Experience working directly with freight rail clients
. - Willingness to travel approximately 25% to support regional offices and project sites (Kansas City, St. Louis, Omaha).
