Description
The Senior Welding Specialist leads the process to review and approve fabrication process documents, including WPS/PQR, NDE procedures, Post Weld Heat Treatment procedures and ITPs to confirm documents and actual fabrication results meet contract requirements. The Senior Welding Specialist works directly with mechanical, piping and other discipline engineers in the review of special process documents.
- Approve and ensure accurate project budget estimates and manage project expenditures.
- Confirm adherence to project budget estimates.
- Review and verify material and welding procedure submittals for compliance with toughness and Charpy impact requirements in applicable construction codes, including ASME VIII and B31.3.
- Review and evaluate Supplier Welding Procedure, Procedure Qualification Record and material test reports to ASME IX requirements, and provide technical feedback or required revisions.
- Respond to technical inquiries and provide subject matter expertise, adjusting priorities and workload as needed to support project and supplier needs.
- Assess welding procedures and material selections for suitability, identifying metallurgical risks and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Analyze existing processes, develop specific inspection instructions and assignments and implement procedures to improve supplier quality.
- Develop and implement guidelines for the establishment of Shop Surveillance Plans (SSPs) and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
- Develop and implement budget estimation process for submittal review budgets.
- Lead project and purchase order kickoff meetings with suppliers, clients, and engineers.
- Lead pre-inspection meetings with inspectors.
- Validate and approve inspection logs and schedules.
- Present submittal review reports to the project team(s), vendor and client.
- Responsible for outstanding actions and the communication of resolution to appropriate parties.
- Support documentation, review, and resolution of Nonconformance Reports (NCRs).
- Lead presentations involving lessons learned and develop solution and implement to ensure future success.
- Problem solve quality issues with clients, suppliers, and project staff (office and field).
- Lead training for the supplier quality team.
- Apply API 582 guidelines in the review and approval of welding procedures and fabrication practices to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Collaborate with other Welding Engineers and Supplier Quality Specialists.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- Bachelor's degree in a welding engineering technology or related field. and 7 year's experience working in the field of quality control or industrial construction and/or equipment manufacturing required.
- Or, associate degree in a welding technology program, supplier quality program, engineering or related field and 9 year's experience working in the field of quality control industrial construction, and/or equipment manufacturing required.
- Or, High School Diploma/GED and 11 year's experience working in the field of quality control in industrial construction and/or equipment manufacturing, including hands-on experience in welding, weld training, and NDE required.
- Knowledge in ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Sections II, V & IX.
- Experience with welding and materials inspection on large construction projects and experience working with an EPC contractor preferred.
- Experience in qualification and application of weld procedures (WPS), procedure qualification records (PORs), and nondestructive examination (NDE) in accordance with Codes and Standards.
- Strong understanding of material toughness and Charpy impact requirements for materials and welding procedures as required by the major Construction Codes such as ASME VIII and B31.3.
- Ability to review and comment on a Supplier's Welding Procedure, Procedure Qualification Record and material test reports to ASME IX essential, supplementary essential, and nonessential variables.
- Expert with applicable industry's internationally recognized standards and codes.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office.
- Competent with basic AI tools.
