Burns & McDonnell’s Kansas City and/or NW Arkansas office is looking for an ambitious and talented Assistant Civil / Traffic Engineer to join our growing transportation planning team.
As an Assistant Civil / Traffic Engineer in our traffic group, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer (PE) and Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) to assist multidisciplinary project teams to create world class designs for public and private clients on a variety of transportation and development projects.
Our civil / traffic engineers assist our transportation teams through each phase of the project development lifecycle (Feasibility, Schematic & Environmental, Design, and Construction). Projects range in type and scale from City/County arterial studies, innovative intersection designs and traffic impact assessments to billion dollar multi-level freeway designs, intelligent transportation system architecture, and traffic management planning.
What You’ll Do:Working with a close-knit team of multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.
Corresponding and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.
Designing traffic control infrastructure (such as signing, striping, lighting, traffic signal, and Intelligent Transportation System plans).
Developing traffic operations and safety studies, microsimulation traffic models, traffic impact analyses, and highway capacity analyses.
Developing traffic phasing for traffic control plans.
Developing skills in software such as Micro Station, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, HCS, Synchro, PTV Vissim, & Open Roads.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Comply with all policies and standards.
A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from a recognized, accredited program. ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
Master's degree in transportation or traffic engineering preferred.
Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
Basic knowledge in standard civil engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, Micro Station, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, HCS, Synchro, PTV Vissim), and civil analysis programs.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Engineers in Training-EIT Certification strongly preferred.
Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
