Job Purpose

A Material Handler supports production and/or specific areas of the facility by pulling document material, stocking, loading, kitting, cycle count and delivering to the proper workstation. The Material Handler must be capable of supporting all areas within the facility.

Key Job Elements
  • Receive, identify, and unload materials/parts and store in inventory.
  • Identify, draw from inventory, and transport material, parts, and equipment to and from assembly areas, machines, loading docks, and other areas.
  • Familiarize yourself with different work areas to assure prompt delivery and adequate supply of required items, while keeping material organized and keeping production stocked with material.
  • Clearly communicate and document the processing of incoming and outgoing material.
  • Operate industrial forklift, pallet jack, mobile equipment, and/or overhead cranes to perform material handling assignments.
  • Deliver urgent items to the production floor consistently, accurately, and safely.
  • Communicate the tracking of incoming parts and relay this to management quickly, consistently, and accurately.
  • Follow verbal or written work instructions, standards, and QWI’s consistently, accurately, and safely.
Education / Training

1-2 years of experience or forklift and crane certification.

Additional certifications in the operation of other heavy equipment will substitute for years of experience.

Qualifications And Experience
  • Demonstrate the ability to train other employees on safe and efficient operation.
  • Verify orders, pick tickets, packing slips, and other outbound documents created by other work functions. Check figures and maintain accurate piece counts. Verify inventory counts are accurate.
  • Review packaging, labeling, and documentation to ensure conformance.
  • Ensure physical and systematic inventory corresponds.
  • Communicate effectively with process partners to resolve issues.
  • Inspect and complete reports related to safe operation and maintenance of material handling equipment.
Preferred Skills
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Self‑starter, works with little or no supervision, can work in a fast‑paced environment, adjusts to quickly changing requirements and prioritizes consistently, accurately, and safely.
  • Experience with forklift, pallet jack, mobile equipment, dollies, and/or crane.
  • Problem‑solving ability and ability to apply reasoning and common sense for appropriate resolutions.
Essential and Physical Activities Functions
  • Strength – Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, push and pull up to 75 lbs.
  • Motion – Constant walking, frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting, overhead reaching, and climbing ladders.
  • Vision and hearing – Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms.
  • Work environment – Works on varied surfaces, concrete floors, gravel, rail car and locomotive floors. Works at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives. Works in confined spaces. Non‑temperature‑controlled environment, all weather conditions with high noise and high dust levels.
  • Emotional demands – Due to the working environment, noise, dust, personal protective equipment, employee must be comfortable working alone.
