Position: Advanced Practice Provider (PNP-Acute Care) - Heart Transplant/Heart Failure

Overview

The Ward Family Heart  Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is the premier high-volume pediatric heart program in the Midwest. Our focused, interdisciplinary care of children with complex congenital and acquired heart disease brings to bear the expertise of board-certified pediatric cardiologists, congenital cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, anesthesiologists, and advanced practice pediatric critical care nurses. Our facilities include a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care unit in 2021 and the most advanced technology available for diagnosis, treatment, and translational research for our patients, who range in age from fetal to young adult.

The Heart Failure/Heart Transplant APRN participates in the day to day care and management of patients with heart failure and those who are pre and post heart transplant in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The APRN will be expected to take active part in the inpatient HF/HT service as well as clinic patients in the outpatient setting.

The APRN will take call on a rotating basis with the physician providers.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Practice: competently provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing care to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement.
  • Professional Practice: actively participates in beginning leadership, evidence-based practice/research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse mentor.
  • Participation in and management of HF/HT patients in collaboration with the cardiologists, psychologist, pharmacist, social worker, and coordinators in the outpatient clinic.
  • Inpatient HF/HT services in collaboration with the CICU, NICU, Blue Team, and attending cardiologists.
  • Assistance in the management of the ventricular assist device patients.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement projects, lean initiatives, and data management to track patient outcomes.
  • Collaborates with HF/HT cardiologists and coordinators in providing educational opportunities to nursing staff, and medical trainees.
Qualifications
  • PNP
    - Acute Care
    Required upon hire
  • Master's Degree Required and 1-2 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case‑by‑case basis within preferred specialty.
  • DNP preferred and 1-2 years experience Pediatric RN experience. Exceptions considered on a case‑by‑case basis within preferred specialty.
  • Licensed RN - MO, Registered Nurse Multistate License Missouri required upon hire
  • Licensed RN - Kansas, Registered Nurse Multistate License Kansas required upon hire
  • RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
  • APRN KS Advanced Practice Registered Nurse KS APRN license in Kansas Required Upon Hire
  • APRN MO Advanced Practice Registered Nurse MO APRN documentation of Recognition in Missouri Required Upon Hire
  • APRN board certification congruent with population and practice setting (see policy statement: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Roles and Practice Setting) Required Upon Hire
  • Refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy for required Life Support Certifications Required Upon Hire
  • Specialty Certification relevant to unit’s patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) Preferred
