Vascular Access Registered Nurse (VA‑RN) – Children's Mercy Kansas City

The VA‑RN provides placement and maintenance services for vascular access devices to inpatients and outpatients. The role includes selecting appropriate devices and insertion sites, serving as a resource for patients, families, and staff, and implementing measures to reduce complications such as bloodstream infections.
Responsibilities- Provide vascular access services to inpatients and outpatients requiring insertion and maintenance of vascular access devices.
- Serve as a resource for patients, families, and staff to decrease risk of complications, including bloodstream infections.
- Identify and meet the educational needs of patients, families, and staff.
Seasonal influenza vaccination is required for all employees. New hires must be vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and chickenpox (varicella) and/or have documentation of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination since 2005. Medical or religious exemptions may be discussed with Human Resources.
Qualifications- Associate’s Degree (ADN) required or bachelor's degree preferred for hires after September 1, 2013. Current employees hired before September 1, 2013 are grandfathered. 2–3 years of RN experience preferred, ideally in a hospital or nursing home setting.
- Experience with PICC/midline insertion, ultrasound guidance, CVC management, CLABSI prevention, and basic data collection.
- Valid RN license in Kansas or Missouri (multistate license required). Life support certification required upon hire.
- Specialty certification relevant to the unit’s patient population required after one year of employment.
