Children's Mercy has been designated a Level IV NICU by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the highest level of neonatal intensive care. The unit cares for more than 80 fragile newborns requiring complex medical support and surgical intervention. WHO specialized team includes more than 400 newborn medicine specialists, highly trained pediatric nurses, anesthesiologists and state‑of‑the‑art equipment. The ICU nurses employ the nursing process and scientific principles to provide safe, comprehensive, family‑centered, age‑appropriate care.
They continuously monitor patients, educate families, advocate for complex needs, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Utilizes the nursing process to develop and implement a safe, high‑quality, comprehensive, and age‑appropriate plan of care for the critically ill patient and family that promotes optimal patient outcomes.
- Meets the educational and informational needs of the critically ill patient and family and advocates for their needs.
- Maintains an environment that is safe, comfortable, efficient, and family centered.
- Utilizes current research and evidence for practice to expand personal professional knowledge, enhance role performance, and improve nursing care quality for critically ill patients.
- Two years of Level III NICU or 1 year of Level IV NICU experience preferred
- Associate's Degree required
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Licensed RN – Missouri (MF) required upon hire
- Licensed RN – Kansas required upon hire
- RN Compact license for all states besides KS and MO
- Required upon hire:
Life Support Certifications (refer to Nursing and Advanced Practice Provider Licensure and Certification policy) - Specialty Certification relevant to unit's patient population (determined by Nurse Manager/Director) preferred
