The role of a grounds specialist is crucial for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens, sports fields, and commercial landscapes. Grounds Specialist are responsible for a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of these areas, ensuring they are clean, well‑maintained, and visually appealing.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Landscape Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, trimming, and watering lawns, shrubs, trees, and flowerbeds. This includes operating and maintaining landscaping equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers. - Responsible for leading seasonal groundskeepers in various grounds and landscaping duties.
- Plant Care:
Plant, transplant, fertilize, and prune trees, shrubs, and flowers according to seasonal needs and landscaping plans. Monitor plant health and identify and address issues such as pests, diseases, and irrigation problems. - Grounds Specialist may be required to assist with various volunteer groups, especially through our Adopt-a-Home program.
- Weed Control:
Implement weed control measures to keep outdoor spaces free from unwanted vegetation. This may involve manual weeding, mulching, or applying herbicides as necessary. - Trash and Debris Removal:
Regularly clean and remove litter, leaves, branches, and other debris from outdoor areas to maintain cleanliness and safety. - Irrigation System Maintenance:
Inspect, repair, and adjust irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of plants and lawns while conserving water resources. - Path and Pavement Maintenance:
Sweep, clean, and repair paths, sidewalks, and other paved areas to ensure they are safe and well‑maintained. - Equipment Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance tasks on landscaping equipment and tools to ensure they are in good working condition. Report any equipment malfunctions or repair needs to supervisors. - Snow and Ice Removal:
During winter months, clear snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, and other outdoor areas using shovels, snow blowers, or de‑icing agents to prevent accidents and maintain accessibility. - Weekend/Night hours (overtime) may be required during snow removal to ensure the safety of Life Unlimited properties.
- Safety Compliance:
Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols while performing job duties, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe operation of equipment. - Landscaping Projects:
Assist with landscaping projects such as planting new gardens, installing irrigation systems, and constructing walkways or retaining walls as needed. - All Other Duties as Assigned.
This position requires extended periods of walking and standing with some periods of sitting, depending on the needs and requests of the department. It may require light to heavy lifting and occasional stooping, kneeling, and/or bending. Heavy machinery and/or power or hand tools will be used. The position may involve extensive driving in the provision of transportation for individuals in our program(s).
WorkingConditions
The employee will be exposed to office/home environment noises such as telephones, copy and fax machines as well as appliances, machinery, and power/hand tools. The employee may be exposed to blood‑borne pathogens and/or infectious diseases and or potentially toxic fumes, liquids, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance preferred.
- Knowledge of plants, trees, and landscaping techniques.
- Ability to operate landscaping equipment safely and effectively.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks requiring bending, lifting, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions closely.
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must obtain a Class E driver’s license during new hire orientation– must carry minimum coverage applicable by law for auto insurance.
- Must Receive Seasonal Flu Vaccination.
