Coordinator - Safety & Security

Purpose Statement

The job of Coordinator – Safety & Security is done for the purpose/s of assisting with the oversight and implementation of comprehensive safety and security measures within the district by developing and maintaining protocols for emergency preparedness; conducting risk assessments; coordinating training programs; and collaborating with stakeholders to create a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. The coordinator works provocatively to address potential threats, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance with safety regulations to support the overall well‑being of the school community.

Functions
  • Advises school officials on various issues (e.g. crisis plans, threat/suicide assessments, planning traffic control, etc.) for the purpose of assessing and improving procedures related to school safety and security.
  • Assists in developing procedures, communication, and coordination of crisis response (e.g. district buildings, command center, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring consistent, efficient, and effective resolution to potential crisis situations.
  • Assists schools with a variety of tasks (e.g. supervision, residency investigations, welfare checks, behavior risk assessments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established guidelines and promoting a culture of safety.
  • Carries a firearm in accordance with state law and board policy for the purpose of being prepared to ensure the safety of the district if needed.
  • Collaborates with various internal and external personnel (e.g. school staff and district administration, local law enforcement personnel, family court, local agencies, etc.) for the purpose of recommending and implementing comprehensive campus safety and security plans, providing information and/or addressing needs of students and staff.
  • Coordinates program components, support needs and materials (e.g. vendor bids, SRO/SRDs, private security, inspections, etc.) for the purpose of meeting District and/or grant/program guidelines.
  • Designs district wide professional development programs on threat assessment, crisis response, and safety protocols for the purpose of elevating organizational capacity and ensuring consistent implementation.
  • Maintains a variety of manual and electronic files and/or records (e.g. behavior risk assessments, inspection reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing up‑to‑date reference and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Oversees the maintenance and overall function of the district surveillance camera system (e.g. reviewing footage, ensuring proper function, coordinating repairs/upgrades, etc.) for the purpose of contributing to the overall safety and security of staff, students, and visitors.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars (e.g. crisis teams, School Safety Academy, active shooter training, behavior risk assessments, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepares a variety of program‑mandated reports for the purpose of ensuring ongoing funding by complying with district and/or grant/program requirements.
  • Presents information to District and Community groups for the purpose of promoting the program, gaining feedback and complying with established internal controls.
  • Provides formal recommendations to senior district leadership regarding risk‑mitigation priorities, capital improvements, and policy changes for the purpose of influencing long‑range safety strategy.
  • Represents the Director of Safety & Security in their absence for the purpose of addressing matters that require immediate attention.
  • Researches a variety of topics (e.g. new products, laws, regulations, drills, grants, etc.) for the purpose of recommending purchases, and maintaining or improving district wide security processes.
