Job Description

Purpose of Job: Working with diverse security staff and other school staff utilizing the equipment and technology in the integrated security systems and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The site-based security officer’s actions must not be intolerably harsh and rigid when enforcing safety policies, procedures, and protocols.

The officer must respect and regard the students and staff’s emotional and social well-being. The job duties require readiness to respond to potentially life‑threatening situations, including exposure to dangerous chemicals, infectious diseases, fire, gunshots, and physical confrontations, in all weather conditions and on any shift.

Conduct foot patrols inside and outside assigned schools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Preserve peace, protect district property, prevent criminal acts, apprehend violators, enforce district policies and the Student Handbook, and adhere to the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
  • Work under the direct supervision of the first‑line site‑based security supervisor or the assistant security director (or designee).
  • Perform duties in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night).
  • Act under the school principal’s direction for day‑to‑day activities while remaining under the Safety & Security Department’s management control.
  • Maintain professionalism and objectivity in all situations and exercise sound judgment while under stress.
  • Respond with appropriate levels of force as required and within the district’s force options.
  • Communicate verbally, in body language, and in writing.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and complete reports with minimal spelling and grammar errors.
  • Be familiar with all district policies, administrative directives, federal and state laws, and city ordinances that affect the Security Department.
  • Attend all in‑service training as required by Security Department management.
  • Accept transfers to different assignments in the district’s best interest.
  • Maintain and clean department‑issued equipment.
  • Answer calls for service routed from the dispatcher communication center via district‑issued cell phones, hand‑held radios, mobile base station radios, and other modes of communication.
  • Initiate and maintain a good working relationship with other law enforcement agencies and security organizations during job performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
  • Successfully pass the Safety & Security Department pre‑hire multiple choice test and oral interview process.
  • Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment drug screen. (

    Note:

    Subject to post‑accident drug screens and reasonable suspicion drug screens.)
  • Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment physical abilities test. (

    Note:

    Subject to physical abilities testing following an illness or injury that requires prolonged absence from duty.)
  • Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment psychological exam. (

    Note:

    Subject to psychological testing following a catastrophic event or injury.)
  • Obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS‑100.C – Introduction to the Incident Command System.
  • Obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS‑700.b – Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Qualify for and maintain a Private Officers’ Commission from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. (

    Note:

    Must pass the district drug screen annually when renewing the commission.)
  • Be insurable with the district insurance provider.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous law enforcement and security experience.
  • Prior experience working with juveniles in an academic environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires the employee to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 lbs. The employee must be able to walk, run, and climb stairs; engage in physical confrontations; drive a motor vehicle for long periods in all weather conditions; and pass the pre‑employment physical abilities test. Visual ability must include normal vision with correction to 20/20, and hearing must be adequate.
