Purpose of JobWorking with diverse security staff and other school staff utilizing the equipment and technology in the Integrated security systems and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The patrol officer must exercise respect and regard for the students and staff's emotional and social well-being while maintaining readiness to respond to potentially life‑threatening or harmful situations.
Duties include foot patrols inside and outside assigned schools in all weather conditions and shifts.
Responsibilities
- Preserve peace, protect district property, prevent criminal acts, apprehend violators, enforce district policies, the Student Handbook, and adhere to the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
- Operate under direct supervision of the first line security patrol supervisor and follow all duties prescribed by the supervisor or security director.
- Work any shift (day or night) in all weather conditions; the Security Department is responsible 24‑hour protection.
- If assigned to a school, act under the principal’s direction while remaining under the Safety & Security Department’s management control.
- If assigned to the Central Office Building, remain under supervision of the first line patrol supervisor or security director.
- Remain professional, objective, and exercise sound judgment under stress.
- React to situations using appropriate levels of force within district force options.
- Communicate verbally, in body language, and in writing; reports must be clear, concise, and error‑free.
- Be familiar with all district policies, administrative directives, federal and state laws, and city ordinances applicable to the school district.
- Attend all in‑service training as required by security department management.
- Accept transfers to different assignments in the district’s best interest.
- Maintain and clean department‑issued equipment and assigned vehicles.
- Answer calls routed from the dispatcher communication center via district‑issued cell phones, hand‑held radios, mobile base station radios, and other communication modes.
- Initiate contact and maintain good working relationships with other law enforcement agencies and security organizations during performance of duties.

To Be Successful at This Job, You'll Need:Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
- Successfully pass the Safety & Security Department pre‑hire multiple choice test and oral interview process.
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment drug screen.
- Note:
Subject to post‑accident drug screens and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
- Note:
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment physical abilities test.
- Note:
Subject to physical abilities testing following an illness or injury that requires an officer to be absent from duty for a prolonged period.
- Note:
- Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre‑employment psychological exam.
- Note:
Subject to psychological testing following a catastrophic event or injury.

- Must obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS‑100.c – Introduction to the Incident Command System.
- Must obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS‑700.b – Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
- Must qualify with the selected handgun as outlined by the Kansas City, Missouri Board of Police Commissioners, Private Officers Licensing Unit.
- Qualify for and maintain a Private Officers’ Commission from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department.
- Note:
Must pass the district drug screen annually when renewing the Private Officers’ Commission.

- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to operate a security vehicle, including entering and exiting the car multiple times per shift.
