Job Description

Position Title: 7–12 Social Studies Teacher
Location: Anderson County Junior/Senior High School
Reports To: Building Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Contract: Certified Contract
Base Salary: $45-950 (per negotiated agreement; placement on salary schedule based on education and experience)

Position Purpose

The Grades 7–12 Social Studies Teacher provides engaging- standards-based instruction in history- government- geography- economics- and related social sciences. The teacher fosters civic responsibility- critical thinking- historical analysis- and informed decision-making while preparing students for post-secondary education- careers- and active citizenship.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and deliver standards-aligned lessons in social studies for grades 7–12.
  • Teach assigned courses- which may include U.S. History
    - World History
    - Government/Civics
    - Geography
    - Economics- or other related courses.
  • Design lessons that promote inquiry- primary source analysis- and evidence-based reasoning.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs- including accommodations for students with IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Integrate literacy skills- technology- and current events into instruction.
  • Assess student learning using formative and summative measures.
  • Maintain accurate and timely grade records.
  • Establish a respectful- inclusive classroom culture that promotes open dialogue and civil discourse.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.

Student Support & Engagement

  • Encourage civic engagement and critical discussion of historical and contemporary issues.
  • Support students in developing research- analytical writing- and presentation skills.
  • Sponsor or assist with extracurricular activities when assigned (e.g.

    - student council- academic teams- service organizations).

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in professional learning communities and district professional development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress.
  • Maintain Kansas licensure and comply with district policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Kansas Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in Social Studies (6–12 or 7–12).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education or related field.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development.
  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching at both middle and high school levels.
  • Experience with Advanced Placement (AP)- dual credit- or college-preparatory coursework.
  • Experience integrating instructional technology and digital resources.
  • Background in civic engagement or project-based learning.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform routine classroom and instructional tasks.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and the Kansas Educator Evaluation Framework.

USD 365 is located in Anderson County KS (pop. 8,208), serving the communities of Garnett (3,388), Greeley (333), and Westphalia (166). District schools are: 7-12 Anderson County Jr./Sr. High School in Garnett (enr. 420);

K-12 Garnett Elementary School (400); K-6 Greeley Elementary (57);
Westphalia Elementary (52). All district schools are fully accredited and perform at a high academic level. ACHS offers a full array of vocational programs including the opportunity to take college level courses in CNA, Welding, HVAC, and Automotive through a local technical college and community college. Anderson County High School offers 11 varsity sports and a host of fine arts and academic activities.
