USD 204 Position Description

Teacher Special Education

Purpose Statement

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Licensed Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities;
Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Case Manager to assigned students.

Essential Functions
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
  • Administers subject specific assessments, district and/or state tests, etc.for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual educational plans (IEPs)
  • Analyzes assessment data for the purpose of enhancing student achievement.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives, grade-level expectations and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, administration.
  • Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
  • Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
  • Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources and materials
  • Serves as primary contact for the parent.
  • Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Provides direction and supervision of paraprofessionals as directed.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and nonconfidential manual and electronic files and records for the purpose of providing up to date information and/or historical reference in accordance with established administrative guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Demonstrates support for building and district initiatives for the purpose of maximizing a collaborative approach to the District's goals and State Accreditation and Accountability.
  • Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Completes all district and state reporting requirements.
  • Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment and is in adherence to district policies.
  • Models appropriate behaviors and responsibility for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.
  • Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Organizes age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities for the purpose of ensuring student participation in learning activities.
