Job Description

USD 204 Position Description Special Education Paraprofessional

Purpose Statement

The job of Special Education Paraprofessional is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program within assigned classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
  • Administer a variety of instructional activities for supporting instructors in the classroom, under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Assist students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments for practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards, under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Attend meetings and in-service presentations as assigned, to meet the requirements of the State professional development requirements for special education paraprofessionals.
  • Communicate with teachers to give information about student progress on IEP objectives.
  • Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of assigned teacher for reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Maintain instructional and student records, as assigned by the supervising teacher, for providing accurate, documented progress in student learning.
  • Maintain instructional areas, equipment and supplies for ensuring availability of items and providing a safe learning environment.
  • Monitor individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for providing a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Report observations and incidents relating to specific students to supervising teacher.
  • Respond to emergency situations for resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Hold student data and information confidential and follow all parameters for confidentiality of student data and information.
  • Assist students with disabilities according to their needs, physical and/ or personal care.
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follow all district policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school or classroom.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and adhering to safety practices and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include concepts of grammar and punctuation; basic math; stages of child development and learning styles;

and age appropriate activities.
