The position is primarily ELA, but could include Spanish instruction or other content areas as may fit to a candidate's experience and expertise.
The High School English/Language Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and rigorous instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking to students in grades 9–12. The teacher will foster a positive learning environment that promotes academic achievement, creativity, communication skills, and a lifelong appreciation for literature and language.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with state standards, district curriculum, and instructional best practices.
- Teach courses in English/Language Arts, which may include Literature, Composition, Creative Writing, Speech, or Advanced Placement (AP) English.
- Assess student progress through a variety of formative and summative assessments and provide timely feedback.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, emotional, and linguistic needs of students.
- Foster critical thinking, analytical reading, effective writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Create and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning, respect, and student engagement.
- Integrate instructional technology and digital resources into classroom instruction.
- Maintain accurate student records, grades, attendance, and progress reports.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, administrators, and colleagues regarding student progress and classroom activities.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, curriculum planning, and school committees.
- Support school policies, administrative procedures, and student code of conduct.
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field preferred.
- Valid state teaching certification/licensure for secondary English/Language Arts instruction required or the ability to obtain.
- Prior teaching experience at the secondary level preferred.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Knowledge of adolescent literacy development and instructional strategies.
- Ability to engage students with diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
- Proficiency in educational technology and learning management systems.
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success.
- Work is performed primarily in a classroom and school environment.
- May require occasional evening activities such as parent conferences, school events, or professional development sessions.
- Must be able to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and other school settings.
