Job Description

Purpose: The classroom Paraprofessional assists the instructor in creating a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. This position will also have office assistant responsibilities. To accomplish these tasks, the Paraprofessional must work closely with the staff and administration of the district. The office assistant works closely with the building administrator and administrative assistant.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational training.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license (prefer Kansas).
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must submit Health and Tuberculin Certificates on file (after employee offer is made).
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Display dependability and punctuality in attendance.
  • Assure compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
  • Assist in the instruction and supervision of students.
  • Display adaptability in new situations.
  • Provide a safe and welcoming environment for children.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of USD 343.
  • Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of each child through effective communication.
  • Display good judgment in decision manding situations.
  • Respond positively to constructive suggestions for improvement.
  • Utilize time constructively and effectively.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Serve as a role model for children in behavior, appearance, and grooming.
  • Handle and balance multiple demands simultaneously.
  • Interact in a professional manner with all staff members of the school district and community.
  • Work effectively with students, teachers, parents, community agencies, and other groups.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas, and techniques.
  • Maintain confidentiality of classroom, student, and family information.
  • Interact in a professional manner with other staff members.
  • Attend staffing and general staff meetings, as appropriate.
  • Assist in the maintenance and inventory of materials.
  • React to changes and frequent interruptions in a productive and positive manner, and handle other duties as assigned by the building Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools.
Physical Demands

  • Very rarely requires physical exertion beyond walking or climbing stairs.
  • Requires prolonged (over 50% of the time) standing and walking.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, push heavy objects or materials.
  • Driving skills and physical ability required to drive a vehicle. Some positions require driving from one building to another.
  • Must perform first aid and CPR.

Note: “Heavy” means not over 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The employee must be able to work in a stressful environment and in various climate environments outside. The employee may be exposed to students who have aggressive behavior tendencies.
