This position works collaboratively with the lead teacher, classroom teachers, administration, and when appropriate, the district's special education cooperative to ensure every student has access to the behavioral supports needed to succeed.

A central priority of this role is early identification and intervention, with particular emphasis on supporting students in the primary grades so that behavioral patterns can be addressed proactively before they become more entrenched. The Behavior Specialist works alongside the classroom teachers, who focus on the Tier 1 social-emotional learning curriculum.

  • Lead and support the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) or equivalent framework across the building
  • Ensure consistent implementation of behavioral expectations and systems across all classrooms and common areas
  • Serve as a key member of the building's student support team and MTSS process

Data Collection, Analysis, and Action

  • Serve as the building's primary collector and manager of behavioral data, including office discipline referrals, behavioral incident reports, and progress monitoring data for students on BIPs
  • Analyze behavioral data regularly to identify trends, patterns, and areas of need at the individual student, classroom, and building levels
  • Use data to make recommendations for adjustments to interventions, staffing supports, or building-wide systems
  • Present behavioral data summaries to the building principal and leadership team on a regular basis

Teacher and Staff Coaching

  • Coach and support classroom teachers in the implementation of evidence-based Tier 1 classroom management strategies and proactive behavioral practices
  • Provide modeling, co-teaching, and side-by-side coaching support in classrooms as needed
  • Deliver targeted professional learning for staff on behavioral strategies, de-escalation, and trauma-informed practices
  • Serve as a resource and thought partner for teachers when behavioral concerns arise in their classrooms

Family and Community Collaboration

  • Communicate with families regarding behavioral supports and progress in a clear, respectful, and solution-focused manner
  • Participate in parent meetings, student support conferences, and school-based team meetings as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of behavioral interventions and student progress
