Job DescriptionPOSITION SUMMARY
The Special Education Teacher promotes and develops successful learning for students eligible for IDEA services, manages assigned caseload, provides academic and behavioral skills instruction in resource or inclusive classrooms, maintains communication with students, parents, and staff, and develops and implements IEPs. The teacher also monitors instruction in various learning environments and collaborates with general education teachers for meaningful inclusion.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES- Develop and write specific programs and schedules for special education students, including in the regular classroom.
- Support the regular classroom and special education staff in developing students’ Individualized Education Plans.
- Provide specially designed instruction using evidence‑based curricula.
- Consult with and support classroom teachers and assistants in modifying programs and data‑collection systems; provide training on instruction and management of special education students.
- Work with specialists (SLP, motor team, mental health specialist, ASD specialist, school psychologist) to develop services and help staff implement them.
- Plan and implement service delivery models including individual, small group, and classroom settings.
- Create an engaging environment and instruction that enhances learning.
- Complete required IDEA paperwork in a timely manner.
- Implement curriculum to meet each student’s IEP.
- Implement a program‑approved classroom monitoring system focusing on safety, respect, and responsibility.
- Communicate expectations, monitor, and reinforce positive behavior.
- Develop and implement behavior plans aligned with the program model.
- Provide direct instruction, assistance, and professional guidance to staff.
- Maintain open communication with students, parents, and school personnel.
- Treat students with courtesy, dignity, and confidentiality.
- Meet with staff in team meetings to plan interventions.
- Maintain weekly lesson‑plan schedules.
- Provide therapeutic de‑escalation, crisis management, and physical intervention as needed to maintain safety.
- Understand and adhere to mandatory reporting laws; report suspicions of abuse, neglect, self‑harm, or endangerment.
- Maintain consistent attendance.
- Participate in meetings to share information and expertise.
- Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Oregon Teaching License with Handicapped Learner Endorsement.
- Experience coordinating, supporting, and instructing classified staff.
- Experience delivering direct instruction and behavioral/academic programs for students on the autism spectrum.
- Experience designing functional routines with communicative opportunities for students with developmental disabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Knowledge of students with developmental disabilities and behavioral concerns.
- Extensive knowledge of and ability to fulfill IDEA requirements.
- Knowledge of special education law and best practice.
- Knowledge of behavior intervention plans and positive behavior supports.
- Knowledge of Oregon laws, school reform, ECSE, ESY, SPR&I.
- Knowledge of instructional best practices (literacy, life skills, core curriculum).
- Understanding of grade‑level curriculum and instructional techniques.
- Ability to problem‑solve instructional challenges and provide guidance to staff and students.
- Ability to communicate with diverse families in English and Spanish.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records.
- Work collaboratively as a team member.
- Stand/Walk: 6‑8 hours per shift.
- Sit: 5‑8 hours per shift.
- Drive: 1‑3 hours per shift.
- Use hands for repetitive tasks: single grasping, pushing and pulling, fine manipulation.
- Bend, squat, climb stairs, lift described in medium workload categories.
