Paraprofessional/Special Ed Paraprofessional

This position is responsible to the Director of Pupil Services and/or Principal and is responsible to the classroom teacher. The qualifications include being at least 18 years of age, holding a high school diploma or equivalent, ability to assist and/or supervise students, meeting all mandated health requirements, having a clear criminal record, experience working with persons with disabilities preferably in a school setting, holding a valid Ohio Educational Aide Certificate with the addition of the ESEA qualified endorsement or holding a Bachelor's degree ODE issued license/certificate, and holding and maintaining current Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) certification for those placed in the preschool setting.

Responsibilities and specific duties include monitoring and implementing instructional activities, providing for the safety of the students, assisting with the implementation of student IEPs, working on designated student days and waiver days, assisting and supervising children in various instructional or school related settings, knowledge of and ability with training to use appropriate techniques involving physical crisis intervention, making recommendations for instructional program improvement, assisting students with organizational and study skills, reinforcing goals and objectives of the students' IEP, using appropriate behavior management, motivational and reinforcement techniques with students, successfully completing training in supporting students with special needs, supporting in the collection of data, maintenance of charts, and assisting with informal assessments and writing anecdotal records, participating in or attending appropriate team meetings as necessary, providing ongoing feedback regarding changes in student performance, assisting in care and organization of instructional materials and equipment, feeding, dressing, and performing other personal care routines for students as needed, participating in bus loading and unloading as necessary, and performing other job-related duties as assigned within the general scope of the job description by the classroom teacher, building principal, and Director of Pupil Services.

Essential elements include the ability to interact with students and their families in a manner that demonstrates respect and concern, knowledge of child development, ability to work with students of different ages, mental and physical abilities, commitment to the improvement of educational programs, working knowledge of any or all office equipment, and willingness to participate in professional development activities.

Physical and other requirements include sufficient ambulatory ability, ability to hear, see, speak, use arms, hands, legs, and feet, ability to plan ahead and adapt to new situations or react to emergencies, ability to interact well with other people and work alone, physical ability to perform student transfer techniques and operate student equipment, handling bodily fluids containing blood and exposure to blood borne pathogens, following safety guidelines provided in training and safety manuals, and ability to change work assignment from school to school when so designated by the supervisor.
