Instructional Para educator assists in supervising, caring for, and instructing students with special needs in regular education classrooms, interrelated resource rooms, and other special settings. The role implements instructional plans, monitors student behavior, and provides information to appropriate school personnel under direct supervision of a Special Education Teacher.
The position may support students across Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, resource rooms, or in collaboration with speech and school psychologists. It may also serve students with mild to moderate disabilities, including deaf/hard of hearing and visual impairments, within the general education environment.
Essential Functions- Adapt and provide accommodations for classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the teacher to enable special education students to participate in general education and/or resource room activities.
- Aid students in and out of classroom (e.g. packing backpacks, note taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills, etc.) to support their needs and social growth.
- Assist students requiring supports in addressing personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations (i.e. diaper changing, potty training, lavatory, hand washing, nutritional, etc.) to allow students to function and maintain participation in the general education school environment.
- Participate in trainings (e.g. education strategies, specific disability education, etc.) to acquire and/or convey information relative to the job functions to meet established annual State requirements.
- Collaborate with staff to provide necessary support and information related to the student’s progress as established in the Individual Education Plan under the direction of certified staff.
- Create visual aids based on the level of the student’s visual impairment to improve the student’s learning process (for para educators serving students with vision impairments).
- Implement educational and behavioral programming under the supervision of classroom certified staff to develop new skills for students.
- Assist students with challenging and/or aggressive behaviors in accordance with the general education policies, procedures, and the IEP.
- Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings within the general education building (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to meet IEP goals under the direction of certified staff.
- Maintain instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability of instructional materials and provide reliable information regarding student progress.
- Monitor students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments and/or community environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, fire drills, assemblies, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) to provide a safe and positive environment conducive to learning.
- Assist in establishing a positive learning environment, and respond to the individual needs of students.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with other paras, professionals, community agencies, and other groups.
- Safeguard confidential information and observe confidentiality requirements.
- Use appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
- Show faithful, daily attendance and adherence to work schedules.
- Observe all district and interlocal policies during activities.
- Restrict cell phone usage to break and lunch times.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the educational team.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills:
Adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment including relevant software applications, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and using district-approved crisis intervention techniques.
