Job DescriptionPurpose: The Instructional Para educator assists in the supervision, care and instruction of students with special needs in the regular education classroom, interrelated resource rooms or other special needs settings; assists in implementing plans for instruction; monitors student behavior; and provides information to appropriate school personnel, all under the direct supervision of the Special Education Teacher.
Position may work with students in Early Childhood settings, Elementary or Secondary classrooms, resource rooms, or with speech and school psych providers. Additionally may support students with mild to moderate disabilities who can also be served in the general education setting.
Essential Functions- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under teacher direction to provide opportunity for special education students to participate in general education and/or resource room activities.
- Aids students in and out of classroom activities such as packing backpacks, note taking, relationship building, field trips, social skills, etc.
- Assists students requiring supports in addressing personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations.
- Participates in trainings to acquire and convey information relative to job functions to meet annual state requirements.
- Collaborates with staff to provide support and information related to the student’s progress as established in the IEP.
- Creates visual aids for students with visual impairments.
- Implements educational and behavioral programming under supervision of certified staff.
- Assists students with challenging or aggressive behaviors in accordance with policies and IEP.
- Instructs students in various activities in individual and group settings to meet IEP goals.
- Maintains instructional materials and data sheets to ensure availability and reliability of student progress information.
- Monitors students during assigned periods across school and community environments to provide a safe learning environment.
- Establishes a positive learning environment and responds to individual student needs.
- Shows effective interpersonal relationships with other paras, professionals, community agencies, and groups.
- Safeguards confidential information and observes confidentiality requirements.
- Uses appropriate behavior management techniques to maintain a positive climate for learning.
- Maintains daily attendance and adherence to work schedules.
- Observes all district and interlocal policies during activities.
- Restricts cell phone usage to break and lunch times.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the educational team.
Experience: Job related experience desired.
Education/
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have 48 college hours or qualifying score on Master Teacher Online Exam within first 90 days of employment, and complete 20 hours of in-service training annually.
Clearances: Criminal Background check, Health and Inoculation Certificate must be on file in Central Office.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Type: Full‑Time
Salary: $13.50 to $13.90 per hour (variable based on hours, training, etc.)
Physical Requirements: Walking, sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity. May require travel and work indoors/outdoors year‑round in noisy, stressful, crowded environments.
Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesSkills: Adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment, using relevant software, preparing accurate records, applying district-approved crisis intervention techniques.
Knowledge: Basic math, reading and following instructions, understanding complex multi‑step written and oral instructions; instructional procedures, age‑appropriate student activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, child development stages, crisis de‑escalation techniques, safe handling of blood‑borne pathogens.
Ability: Scheduling activities, collecting data, using basic job equipment; flexibility to work with others; teamwork, prioritizing, responding to constant interruptions; handling confidential information; receiving constructive feedback.
