Emergency Dispatcher / Detention Officer
Buffalo County is seeking applicants for a dispatcher-focused public safety position that combines emergency communications and detention officer responsibilities. This role is approximately 80% emergency dispatching and 20% detention duties, with full training provided for both roles.

Pay & Schedule Summary- Starting pay: $26.49 per hour
- Night shift differential: +$2.00 per hour. Night shift pay=$28.49 per hour
- Shift: 12-hour night shifts (5:00 PM – 5:00 AM)
- Schedule:
2-2-3 rotation (work two days, off two days, work three days; alternating weekends)
This position combines emergency dispatching and detention officer responsibilities, with the majority of time spent in emergency communications.
Emergency Dispatcher Duties- Receive emergency and non-emergency calls
- Gather critical information calmly and accurately
- Dispatch police, fire, and medical services
- Monitor radio frequencies and communicate clearly under pressure
- Use computer-based dispatch and record systems
- Supervise inmates in a controlled, secure environment
- Conduct safety and welfare checks
- Enforce facility rules and procedures
- Book and release inmates
- Maintain safety and accurate documentation
- Work as part of a team to ensure safety and security
This position involves 12-hour night shifts in fast-paced environments. Emergency dispatching can involve emotionally challenging situations, and detention duties require attention to safety, structure, and established procedures.
To support informed decision-making, candidates will have the opportunity to shadow the position prior to interviewing, allowing you to see the work firsthand and ask questions before moving forward.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 18 years old
- Maintain a valid Driver's License
- Vision correctable to 20/20
- No felony or domestic abuse convictions
- Must be Jail Officer certified through WI LESB or have the ability to become certified within one year (training provided).
- Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) pension
