Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

The Assistive Technology Specialist will work collaboratively on the district’s Assistive Technology Team and will be responsible for the review and recommendation of Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices as well as Assistive (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). to staff. This itinerant position will ensure that students throughout the district with disabilities are provided the tools that they need to communicate and access their curriculum.

The position reports to the OT/PT/AT Department Specialist and the Speech Department Specialist jointly. The position is evaluated by the Speech Department Specialist.

• Travel throughout the district to all of the school buildings to perform job functions.
• Complete required documentation within designated timelines.
• Assist with the development of a student’s IEP in regards to required AAC/AT.
• Participate in IEP or problem solving meetings as appropriate or based on need.
• Support & collaborate with staff/students to implement AAC/AT devices at the school & district levels.
• Review and utilize data from AAC/AT usage to make appropriate recommendations for students and staff regarding device selection and implementation.
• Provide small and large group training for school staff, parents, students, and administrators on AAC/AT hardware and software.
• Research AAC/AT best practices, communication devices, software applications, vendors, etc. to become a knowledgeable resource on assistive technology devices and services.
• Communicate with parents, case managers, teachers and school administration regarding a student’s AAC/AT needs.
• Monitor and assist with the transfer of AAC/AT hardware and software within the district.
• Provide inventory management support for AAC/AT hardware and software.
• Utilize calendar for scheduling of meetings and documentation of activities.
• Other duties as determined necessary to support the Assistive Technology Department.
• Follow and implement the written processes for AAC/AT determination.
• Attend all Speech Department professional development opportunities.
• Attend all Speech Departmental meetings.

Professional Educator License:
Speech-Language Pathologist – Preferred. Master’s Degree and ASHA certification are required. License through Illinois Department of Financial and Public Regulations in Speech Language Pathology. LBS1 and OTR will be considered.

Minimum of three years experience and/or evidence of working with a variety of alternative augmentative communication and/or curriculum access solutions for individuals with disabilities.
