Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Speech/Language Pathologist will be directly responsible to the Coordinator of Speech/Language. The function of the Speech/Language Pathologist involves many aspects. The first of these is to identify those children who exhibit a communication disorder, which interferes with their being understood when talking to others. The SLP then works with these children not only to help them express their unique needs but also to understand what others are saying to them.

Another function includes giving basic ideas to parents and teachers, which may influence their work with children's speech and language skills.

Responsibilities
  • Speech and Language Service for all students with speech and/or language impairments that interfere with their educational or social development.
  • Speech and Language services may be made available as:
    • A supportive service to the standard program
    • A related service to a special program
    • A special program

    • Screening and diagnosis of children with speech and/or language impairment

    • Consultative and resource services to other professional personnel
  • The number of children seen by a Speech/Language Pathologist shall be based on the severity of the speech and language needs of the individual child;
    Caseload shall be determined by service units based on severity of students' needs. A full‑time caseload will equal 100‑125 service units weekly based on the building and population served; A part‑time caseload will equal 25‑30 service units daily based on the building and population served. Students are to be seen in small group sessions. When a student presents with exceptional characteristics that would preclude a group setting as an effective therapeutic intervention, that student may be seen on an individual basis.
  • On Wednesdays, no children receive direct therapeutic intervention;
    The SLP is to utilize Wednesdays for testing, screening, developing lesson plans, completing paperwork, attending meetings, and/or other duties which may be assigned.
