Parent Peer Support Specialist

Supervisor: ICB Supervisor

Primary Function

Provide support for primary caregivers of SED children and adolescents experiencing a high level of behavioral and/or emotional disturbance who meet criteria and are accepted onto the Intensive Community-Based team (ICB); help develop individual and family partnerships with SRMHW treatment providers, schools, and other agencies as needed; and assist caregivers with resources to help reduce stressors on the family unit and client.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • To maintain positive engagement with the primary caregivers of clients on the ICB treatment team.
  • To work collaboratively and productively with the ICB team by bringing the caregiver perspective, strengths, and needs to ICB meetings.
  • To support the ICB team, primary caregivers, and client by professionally advocating for the client’s needs.
  • To ensure referrals for ICB Parent Peer Support are acted upon within 24 business hours.
  • Conduct and provide services based on client’s needs (home, community, etc.) with flexibility of evenings and weekend appointments, if needed.
  • To carry out Parent Peer Support interventions as specified in the client’s treatment plan.
  • To maintain accurate records of services and activities in accordance with SRMHW Documentation standards.
  • To work closely with community and agency resources and maintain professional working relationships with service providers.
  • To become knowledgeable about community and area resources and assist primary caregivers in engaging with resources requested and accepted by the family.
  • Participate in the after hours mobile crisis response team on call rotation, approximately 4-5 times per year as assigned.
  • Job Qualifications
    • Minimum of 21 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Lived Experience Requirement: Must self‑identify as a present or former primary caregiver (parent/guardian) with lived experience in raising a child with a Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED), Substance Use Disorder (SUD), or a co‑occurring mental health challenge.
    • Satisfactory completion of required Background Checks and Pre‑employment Drug Screening.
    • Completion of state required Level 1 and Level 2 training including Families Together and KCPPSST certification.
    • The appropriate candidate must possess the ability to interact with and provide direct services to families with SED children. Possess strong organizational skills, high level of dependability, computer fluency and be able to work in a “team” environment.
    Typical Physical Demands and Working Conditions
    • Requires sitting for extended periods of time.
    • Occasional bending, stretching, or lifting.
    • May require contact with individuals with communicable diseases.
    • Requires the ability to work under high stress conditions for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to drive and transport clients.
    • Ability to prepare written reports, use telephone equipment, and possess basic computer skills.
    • Normal office environment.
    • Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions in a clinic environment.
