Position Title
SW KC Mkt Phlebotomist / Lab Assistant Days - Full Time – Kansas Drive Medical Pavilion, Louisburg Medical Pavilion, Osawatomie Medical Pavilion
OverviewPhlebotomist within the clinical laboratory responsible for interpreting orders for lab work from providers inside and outside the University of Kansas Health System and ensuring correct tube type, positive patient identification, and specimen integrity. Performs specimen processing, data entry, customer service, and quality improvement activities.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions- Perform blood draws by venipuncture according to standard protocol, ensuring patient safety and quality specimen collection.
- Perform specimen collection using appropriate techniques and adhering to requirements.
- Provide patients and/or care providers with instructions and necessary materials for specimen collection.
- Assist patients if post-venipuncture reaction; escort adolescents/young adults to recliner.
- Perform data entry in applicable information systems in compliance with policies.
- Ensure proper container type, centrifugation, and transport conditions for specimens.
- Determine appropriateness of specimens for add-on testing.
- Release orders on ambulatory health system patients with orders in HIS and enter outside orders in LIS.
- Print bar code labels, affix labels to specimens, and handle sampling procedures.
- Consult with Phlebotomy Coordinator, Supervisor, or Lab Leadership as needed.
- Provide assistance to nursing staff when requested.
- Perform specimen processing duties such as aliquoting urine and separating blood samples.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of supplies.
- Respond to telephone inquiries and provide customer service.
- Instruct or mentor students, employees, patients, and other health care providers as applicable.
- Provide coverage at alternate locations as requested to meet staffing levels.
- Perform professional, clinical, and technical competencies required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High School Graduate.
- Less than 1 year 6 months experience in an internal phlebotomy training program OR 1 or more years experience in specimen collection and processing OR completion of an external phlebotomy program.
Education and Experience
- Advanced level of skill in adult and pediatric phlebotomy.
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) – American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP).
- Valid driver's license recommended.
- Fluent English – ability to understand, read, write, and speak English.
