Position Overview:The medical assistant performs a variety of patient care activities in the clinic. The expectation is provider support and will assist nursing within defined limits of practice. Work requires general supervision, but every day assignments are carried out with a considerable degree of independence.

Major Duties/Key Responsibilities/

Strong computer skills; including but not limited to spreadsheets, word documents, internet, e-fax, email and Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with others both in person and over the phone.

Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and correct errors. Exhibit understanding and comply with healthcare regulatory and compliance policy. Exhibit knowledge and understanding of clinic policies and procedures. Ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks effectively and efficiently while maintaining a professional, courteous manner. High integrity, including maintaining confidential information. Must be highly organized, timely and thorough.

Must be able to exercise good judgement and positively influence others, including handling confrontations with poise and efficiency. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, coworkers, patients and management team. Ability to understand, read, write and speak English.

Education:

High School Diploma, CCMA or CMA preferred. CPR Certification.

Ensures exam rooms are stocked and prepared for patient care. Assists providers in clinic by rooming patients as soon as possible from check-in, capturing vitals, SDOH and subjective intake information and updating the medication list to accurately reflect how a patient is administering home medications. Recognizes impending emergencies and acts appropriately. Notifies providers when patients are ready for examination/treatment, assuring patients are seen in a timely fashion as well as keeping rooms full for consistent flow of patients.

Notifies providers of scheduling changes due to emergencies and assists in helping to minimize chaos as well as communicates to front desk and patients any unforeseen delays (i.e. physicians being tied up with patient care). Assists providers in addressing nursing home correspondence with any provider orders, whether verbal or written, with provider’s signature as well as verbal documentation for labs and x-rays ordered by the provider to authenticate orders per clinic policy and updating the medical record to reflect the communication.

Assists providers by updating the EMR with outside provider medication order changes, outside procedure and immunizations for proper tracking and care by sorting, reviewing and follow-up on any incoming patient records (lab, x-ray, consults, notes, faxes, messages, etc.) Also reviews and addresses any concerns with covering provider in the absence of a provider for extended vacations. Ensure proper review and attention is given to pertinent information.

Maintains appropriate charting of patient record in a timely manner.

Attends meetings with pharmaceutical representatives or providers for educational purposes as requested. Responds to the specific needs of the provider and conforms to each provider’s individual practice style as well as maintaining uniformity throughout the clinic. Complete knowledge of all laboratory tests as well as ability to perform accurately the authorized waived tests, i.e. glucometer, hemacue, dip stick UA, UCG, rapid strep, influenza and hemoccult readings, etc.
