Position SummaryThe Universal Worker (PRN) is a cross-trained team member responsible for providing support in the dietary, housekeeping, and laundry departments of the assisted living community. This position helps ensure residents receive nutritious meals in a clean, safe, and comfortable environment by assisting where staffing needs are greatest. The Universal Worker is expected to provide excellent customer service, maintain infection prevention standards, and promote the dignity, independence, and well-being of all residents.
This is a PRN (as needed) position. Hours and shifts vary based on facility needs, employee availability, vacations, call-ins, and census.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDietary
- Assist with meal preparation as directed.
- Set up and serve meals according to resident dietary needs and preferences.
- Deliver meals to residents when appropriate.
- Prepare beverages, snacks, and nourishments.
- Wash dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen work areas, dining rooms, and food service equipment.
- Store food items properly following food safety guidelines.
- Follow all infection prevention and food handling regulations.
Housekeeping
- Clean resident apartments, common areas, offices, restrooms, and other assigned areas.
- Dust, vacuum, sweep, mop, disinfect, and polish assigned areas.
- Remove trash and replace liners.
- Replenish cleaning supplies and paper products.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents, visitors, and staff.
- Report maintenance concerns or safety hazards promptly.
Laundry
- Collect, sort, wash, dry, fold, and distribute resident personal laundry and facility linens.
- Operate washers, dryers, and other laundry equipment safely.
- Ensure resident clothing is handled carefully and returned to the correct resident.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laundry area.
- Monitor laundry supplies and notify supervisor when replenishment is needed.
General Responsibilities
- Float between departments based on daily operational needs.
- Provide courteous, respectful service to residents, families, visitors, and coworkers.
- Follow all facility policies, HIPAA requirements, and confidentiality standards.
- Practice proper infection prevention and universal precautions.
- Attend required training and in-service education.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and use personal protective equipment as required.
- Report accidents, incidents, unsafe conditions, and resident concerns promptly.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience
- Previous experience in dietary services, housekeeping, laundry, hospitality, healthcare, or senior living preferred but not required.
- On-the-job training will be provided.

- Ability to operate housekeeping, laundry, and dietary equipment safely.
- Ability to work in environments with varying temperatures, including kitchens, laundry rooms, and resident living areas.
Working Conditions
