Description

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in college buildings and facilities. This includes routine cleaning and sanitation tasks, event support, and minor maintenance duties. The position also involves refuse removal, sidewalk sweeping, snow removal, and occasional support to other facilities departments. This is a non‑exempt position, and employees are eligible for overtime compensation in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain assigned areas, including restrooms, hallways, classrooms, lounges, laundry rooms, dormitories, and offices.
  • Perform routine cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, window washing, and waste removal.
  • Restock supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Assist with room setups and preparations for special events, meetings, and seasonal turnover.
  • Perform sidewalk sweeping, snow and ice removal, and other outdoor maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Report maintenance or safety issues promptly to the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Secure assigned buildings and areas as required.
  • Participate in required training programs related to safety, chemical use, and college policies.
  • Support and supervise student workers and summer custodial crews, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with college departments to meet custodial and facility needs.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance during scheduled shifts.
  • Perform additional job‑related duties as assigned by the supervisor or facilities management.
Working Conditions and

Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Requires physical activity including walking, standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), reaching, and climbing ladders.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required based on assigned tasks.
  • May require early morning, evening, weekend, or holiday hours depending on campus needs.

Job Requirements Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate required (or currently in progress with expected completion date).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and safety guidelines.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment preferred.
FLSA Compliance and Employment Status

This position is classified as non‑exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and employees are entitled to overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per workweek. All hours worked must be accurately reported in accordance with college policy and FLSA regulations.
