Summary

The Director of Support Services oversees the physical environment, operations, maintenance, and compliance for our Critical Access Hospital and Rural Health Clinic. This role ensures a safe, efficient, and functional facility that supports high-quality patient care, regulatory standards (including KDHE licensing and CMS Conditions of Participation for CAHs and RHCs), and operational excellence in a rural healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all facility maintenance, operations, utilities, and building systems to ensure reliability and patient/staff safety.
  • Maintain compliance with CMS Critical Access Hospital and Rural Health Clinic Conditions of Participation, KDHE licensing, NFPA life safety standards, OSHA, and other applicable regulations.
  • Implement and monitor comprehensive maintenance, preventive programs, and infection control measures for the built environment.
  • Manage facility budgets, capital projects, vendor relationships, and resource optimization.
  • Supervise and develop maintenance, EVS, and housekeeping teams.
  • Direct planning, design, construction, and renovation activities.
  • Handle emergency preparedness, risk assessments, and regulatory survey readiness/response.
  • Contribute to hospital-wide quality, safety, and efficiency initiatives.
  • Administer the maintenance program to ensure the operation and effectiveness of facilities.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement departmental policies and procedures, goals and objectives, and standards of work for the maintenance and repair of equipment, buildings, and building systems.
  • Coordinate the repair of equipment or recommend the replacement of equipment or facilities as necessary. Report and follow up on all maintenance concerns. Monitor work orders and submit invoices to accounts payable.

Competencies
  • Maintenance & Operations:
    Manage hospital systems, including HVAC, utilities, medical gas, and emergency power, with preventive programs to ensure reliability and minimal downtime in a rural CAH and RHC.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Maintain knowledge of CMS Conditions of Participation, KDHE standards, NFPA codes, OSHA standards, and infection prevention requirements. Lead survey readiness and corrective actions.
  • Planning, Design & Construction:
    Oversee projects, renovations, capital planning, and risk assessments, including ICRA and ILSM, while preserving safety and operations.
  • Finance & Resource Management:
    Handle budgets, contracts, expense tracking, and resource optimization to support hospital financial goals.
  • Administration & Leadership:
    Supervise teams, foster collaboration, align facility operations with hospital strategy, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Safety & Security:
    Conduct risk assessments, develop emergency plans, and ensure business continuity for rural healthcare challenges.
  • Problem-Solving & Analysis:
    Analyze data, identify issues, and implement solutions to improve efficiency, safety, and patient outcomes.

Minimum Education

High school diploma.

Minimum Experience
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience in healthcare facility management, hospital maintenance, or related operations preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, including CMS Conditions of Participation for CAHs and RHCs, life safety codes, infection control standards, and building systems in a hospital environment preferred.
  • Proven supervisory and leadership experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, communication, and project-management skills.
