Overview

Building Controls & Services Inc. – a member of the AIR Control Concepts family – is an HVAC and building automation company founded in 1985, serving Kansas and Western Missouri. The Systems Specialist II installs, start‑ups, disconnects, and troubleshoots automated building system installations and related service calls.

Responsibilities

Approximately 50% of the role focuses on programs and installations; 25% on customer service; 15% on project management; and 10% on technical assistance.

  • 50% Programs and installs systems and service installed jobs
    • Perform start‑up and check‑out of systems and service installed jobs, as assigned.
    • Load panels with database and conduct an initial check‑out.
    • Troubleshoot programs written by engineers.
    • Run conduits for installation of controls.
    • Complete wiring checkout and assist in automation system start‑ups.
    • Coordinate electrical installation with contractors on the job site.
    • Make final critical adjustments and calibrations on automation systems after installation.
    • Recommend changes or improvements to the supervisor based on findings.
    • Submit written reports covering all aspects of each assignment, including customer, trouble details, equipment, time and materials used, travel and expenses.
    • Follow all proper clothing and safety requirements.
  • 25% Provides customer service by responding to service calls
    • Handle emergency service calls as directed.
    • Respond to customer service calls, check indicated points of trouble and analyze full system requirements.
    • Diagnose trouble or defects in sensors, field panels, or control consoles.
    • Disconnect and dismantle instruments as necessary and correct trouble or defect by adjusting, repairing or replacing parts or units.
    • Discuss problems and advise customers when faulty components are not the company's product.
    • Present a professional image of the company when speaking to customers of all levels.
  • 15% Manages projects to ensure quality outcomes on time and within budget
    • Understand job cost estimates and complete jobs under cost and hours given.
    • Participate in job‑site final walk‑throughs to ensure quality installation.
  • 10% Provides technical assistance and training as needed
    • Deliver technical support to end users and field labor when applicable.
    • Conduct onsite customer training as needed.
Education and Experience

Education:

High school graduation or equivalent.

  • Minimum two years of experience in HVAC, electrical concepts, and automation systems.
  • Strong knowledge of automation systems, HVAC, and electrical concepts and operations.
  • Proficiency in job start‑up, checkout, programming, graphics, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in running conduit for installation of controls.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong math and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions and prioritize tasks.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver license.
  • Technical school certificates.
Other Requirements
  • May require overtime, evening or weekend work.
  • Requires travel to and from job sites; some assignments may be out of town.
  • Requires occasional overnight stays.
Training and Development
  • Continuing education annually, as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, balancing, twisting, and reaching.
  • Requires carrying, lifting, moving, or pushing up to 100 pounds, occasionally more.
  • Must be able to talk, listen, use hands and fingers, and utilize manual dexterity.
  • Requires visual acuity for up‑to‑distance and color distinguishing.
Work Environment
  • Regular work at job sites in indoor and outdoor conditions, near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, extreme heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Exposure to potentially toxic fumes or chemicals and vibration; risk of electrical shock.
  • Noise levels range from moderate to very loud.
  • Typical duties involve working with HVAC equipment and computers in close quarters.
