Diesel Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the safe operation, repair, rebuilding, and maintenance of company-owned or leased heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment, including rolling stock. The primary goal is to ensure all equipment is in top condition and operates safely at all times.
Key Responsibilities Maintenance & RepairDiagnose and repair operational difficulties with heavy-duty diesel trucks and equipment. This includes maintaining and repairing heavy diesel, CNG, gas, and electrically operated equipment and vehicles.
Planning & SchedulingPlan and schedule repairs using the M5 planner and procure all necessary parts for successful job completion.
Administrative DutiesComplete reports, work orders, and order parts daily. Assist in reviewing mechanical write-ups and coordinating repair schedules.
Safety & ComplianceEnsure safe working conditions and compliance with all safety regulations and federal, state/provincial, and local laws.
TrainingAssist in the training and orientation of new employees.
Continuous LearningMaintain working knowledge of the latest technology through technical manuals, seminars, and testing.
Requirements EducationHigh school diploma or GED; a technical diploma is preferred.
ExperienceMinimum of one (1) year of experience as a diesel mechanic.
Technical SkillsExperience using diagnostic software is a plus. Must be computer literate and willing to be trained on new software systems.
Safety StandardsMust meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions, work independently, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to understand and use repair and parts manuals written in English.
- Ability to operate all vehicles and equipment necessary for the job.
Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and lift/push/pull up to 100 pounds.
EnvironmentFrequent exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and varying weather conditions (hot/cold/humid).
ToolsMust possess, provide, and maintain the tools necessary for heavy/hydraulic equipment maintenance.
