The University of Hawai'i West O'ahu (UHWO) seeks an exemplary teacher/scholar to teach and develop science education courses and licensure pathways within its established and emerging Bachelor of Education, Pre-K-12 programs. Priority will be given to candidates with experience in designing undergraduate science education curricula that align with professional discipline standards, including but not limited to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching and Instruction
* Teach undergraduate courses in science education.
* Lead the ongoing improvement and development of pre-K-12 science education licensure pathways.
* Supervise field experiences, practicum, and/or student teaching placements.
Scholarly Activity, Research, and Creative Endeavors
* Engage in scholarly research and creative activities, culminating in peer-reviewed publications, with a focus on practitioner journals.
* Actively participate in professional education associations related to science education.
* Pursue ongoing professional development to remain current with trends and advancements in the field.
* Contribute to program assessment and continuous improvement.
Service
* Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with local schools.
* Provide service to the teaching profession and the broader community.
* Advise undergraduate teacher candidates on academic and professional matters.
* Participate in faculty governance and institutional activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
* Earned doctorate in one or more fields of Science Education from a regionally accredited institution (e.g., Curriculum and Instruction: Science Education).
* At least three (3) years of outstanding experience as a licensed, pre-K-12 science and/or STEM classroom teacher.
* Strong commitment to standards-based teacher preparation, informed by current research and best practices in science education.
* Scholarly publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals, along with presentations at professional conferences.
* Demonstrated potential to conduct research and publish scholarly work on topics relevant to science teaching or the education of preservice candidates.
* Proven success in teaching using online and/or technology-assisted instruction.
* Evidence of quality service to the teaching profession and the broader community.
* Excellent collaboration skills with university colleagues and K-12 school districts.
* A demonstrated commitment to diversity and to the education of culturally and linguistically diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities.
* ABD candidates must complete their doctorate by August 1, 2026.
Desirable
Qualifications:
* Knowledge and experience with emerging 21st Century digital technologies, including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer coding.
* A strong commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the mission and purpose of the University of Hawai'i West O'ahu, especially in advancing the university as a leading indigenous-serving institution.
* Experience developing innovative, technology-driven courses for non-traditional students.
* Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Hawaii State Standards, and
* CAEP national accreditation standards and processes.
* Experience working in Professional Development Schools (PDS).
* Demonstrated excellence in teaching within culturally and linguistically diverse settings.
* Proven excellence in post-secondary teaching in a regionally accredited teacher education program.
* A focused scholarly research agenda that directly informs the candidate's teaching and practice.
