Barbers Point Elementary: Grade K-5 School Counselor

Minimum Qualifications

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian, or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

Elementary Counselor (Grades K‑5)

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of three years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a program to continue employment with the Department and demonstrate active pursuit of licensing requirements each year, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you enroll in aligns with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit.

• Compensation: 10‑month teachers compensated according to the B5 10‑month salary schedule.
• 18 days of paid sick leave (six of which may be used for personal or professional development) and state/federal holidays.
• Health insurance:
  State pays part of premiums for eligible employees under the State‑sponsored Medical, Drug, Vision, and Adult Dental Plan.
• Group life insurance:
  State provides a free life insurance policy for employees and retirees.
• Premium conversion plan:
  Employees may increase take‑home pay by having the State deduct health care cost before payroll taxes.
• Flexible spending accounts:
  Employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and social security taxes.
• Retirement plan:
  State contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees; eligibility depends on service and age.
• Tax shelter annuity (TSA):
  Eligible employees may participate in a pre‑tax investment program authorized by the State.
• Deferred compensation:
  State offers a tax‑deferred retirement investment program with various options.
• Temporary disability insurance:
  Qualified employees may receive benefits for non‑work related injuries or illnesses.
• Social security:
  The State contributes to employees’ social security accounts.
• Workers’ compensation:
  Benefits covering medical expenses and partial wage support may be available through workers’ compensation.
• Union & collective bargaining:
  Employees may join the Hawaii State Teachers Association, which offers discounts, insurance, and other opportunities.

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods of their start date. Paydays are on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.
