Assistant Professor (Social Sciences)
This tenure-track Assistant Professor of Political Science will have a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of Political Science courses, as well as Social Sciences foundation courses, contingent on the needs of the Political Science concentration and the Division of Social Sciences, respectively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Specializing in serving a large Native Hawaiian population, effective teaching is the primary mission of this position and the University of Hawaii
-West Oahu. The area of specialization is open to, however, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the course offerings of the Division of Social Sciences including supervising the Legislative Internship courses and teach a variety of existing lower and upper-level Political Science courses including, but not limited to:
Introduction to Political Science, Constitutional Law, Politics of Public Policy, Hawaii Politics, Pacific Asian Politics, Senior Capstone, and other courses as necessary to meet the needs of the program. - The regular teaching load is three courses per semester, and the successful candidate will deliver both traditional in-person courses at the UHWO campus as well as online classes.
- Will be expected to conduct pure or applied research and participate in student academic advising, faculty governance, and institutional service.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Political Science from an accredited university.
- Excellence in teaching as demonstrated by student evaluations and/or administrative reviews.
- Active scholarly research agenda demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication(s) and presentations at professional conferences.
Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to interact and collaborate effectively across a broad range of student backgrounds and learning styles.
- Demonstrated ability to teach experiential learning courses with a focus on law and society, public policy, and political economy.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver in-person, hybrid, and online courses.
- Ability to contribute to the expansion of the Political Science curriculum in the areas consistent with personal interests and program needs.
- Dedication to advancing the University of Hawaii's institutional mission as a leader in Native Hawaiian higher education and community partnership.
