About the Job: In this role, you will act as HUC ambassadors, engaging customers through tastings, live cooking demos, and educational outreach. This role is vital to building awareness and enthusiasm for Hawaiʻi-grown products. The ideal candidate is energetic, curious, has a passion for Hawai‘i food and agriculture, and is comfortable proactively engaging with a broad range of audiences in public settings.
This work requires adherence to applicable food safety standards and a commitment to transparency about the products and their contents. Shift days and hours vary weekly depending on demo/event availability. State recognized food handlers/food safety certification required.
About the Organization: Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Co-op (HUC) is a farmer-owned business revitalizing ‘ulu (breadfruit) as a viable crop and dietary staple here in Hawai‘i. We do this by empowering farmers to be changemakers in our local food system. Since 2016, we have grown from 9 member-farms to over 190 member-farms across Hawaiʻi. Our members are committed to offering high-quality ‘ulu products that are delicious, versatile, locally grown, healthy, accessible, and sustainable.
Our vision is a thriving cooperative that sustains and uplifts producers, consumers, and society as a whole.
- Engage with shoppers and event attendees to share HUC products and stories.
- Prepare and serve samples (both pre-prepared and with live cooking demos).
- Represent HUC professionally and knowledgeably.
- Transport, set up, and break down demo/event equipment.
- Communicate regularly with the Retail Sales Lead.
- Open to conducting data collection on product pricing as needed.
- Maintain food safety standards.
- Lift up to 40 lbs multiple times per day.
- Stand for 3+ hours at a time.
- Work independently without onsite supervision.
- Travel using a personal vehicle.
- 18+ years old; 1+ year of Hawaiʻi residency.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Basic technical skills (email, mobile communication).
- Willingness to learn deeply and share knowledge about ‘ulu, kalo, ‘uala, and pala‘ai.
- 2+ years in agriculture, food, or beverage sectors.
- Knowledge, appreciation, and sensitivity to the Hawaiian language and culture.
- Familiarity with agroforestry, indigenous crops, sustainable agriculture and/or natural resource management or conservation.
- Familiarity with culinary techniques, Hawaii’s unique food history, and general cooking experience.
- Individuals with work and lived experiences that align and complement the organization’s mission and vision.
Demos/Hours are scheduled as needed in coordination with the Retail Sales Lead. Estimated average demos per month: 4 – 6.
Compensation & Contract Terms- $25/hour for longer demos or training.
- Contractors provide their own transportation.
- Scheduling varies based on demo/event needs.
