Job SummarySells general merchandise to customers exercising professional selling techniques. Works as part of a sales team to provide service that anticipates and exceeds customer expectations. Assists in all aspects of ensuring full operation of the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar, including opening and closing the Convenience Bar, preparing, displaying, replenishing goods, and cleaning stations and equipment as necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities- Greets and engages customers in conversation to provide sales‑related assistance, assists in selection of merchandise, and suggests additional items to complement the customer’s selections. Where applicable, offers customers the opportunity to purchase extended product warranties and explains coverage, benefits, and price.
- Interacts with customers and coworkers in a friendly and professional manner, adheres to the NEX dress code/uniform standards, and supports sales team members to the maximum extent possible.
- Becomes knowledgeable regarding merchandise selected, including proper set‑up, use, care, and characteristics of various product price points, warrantee coverage, etc., and communicates product‑related information to customers knowledgeably and legibly.
- Ensures assigned areas are fully stocked and merchandise is neatly arranged. Communicates with supervisor, store manager, etc., regarding stock additions, deletions, fast and slow selling merchandise, customer preferences, and problems. Participates in department meetings and actively seeks to exchange ideas regarding improvements in customer service, job performance, and achievement of store/department sales goals.
- Completes sales transactions efficiently and thanks customers for their patronage.
- Performs all types of cash register transactions (cash, charge, check, gift certificates, layaway, etc.) accurately and in accordance with procedure.
- Advises customers about upcoming sales events and services available throughout the Navy Exchange, such as gift wrapping, engraving, delivery, and gift certificates, and offers customers the opportunity to open a NEXCARD account and informs them of its benefits.
- Becomes knowledgeable in NEX store policies, including the Richter Merchandising System, merchandise returns, price matching, check cashing, rain checks, etc. Handles customer returns and problems tactfully and efficiently, applying store policies consistently to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Maintains a high level of awareness in assigned areas and provides excellent customer service to all patrons (internal and external) to deter theft.
- Unpacks, stages, and moves merchandise as assigned; assists in creating store displays and performing periodic inventories.
- Completes paper work associated with merchandise/inventory movement, price adjustments, customer returns, and cash register operation accurately and completely.
- Is eligible for and participates in applicable commission and gain sharing sales incentive programs.
- Is required to lift up to 25 lbs. as it relates to job duties, including assisting customers, lifting merchandise, and stocking the sales area as necessary.
- Open and close the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar.
- Ensure all equipment is turned on during opening and turned off during closing (e.g., display merchandiser, signs, etc.).
- Preheat and display products in the heated display merchandiser.
- Ensure sufficient goods and products are readily available for customers by replenishing products and condiments (e.g., napkins, straws, cups, lids, creamer, sugar, etc.) in the holding bins on the beverage bar.
- Ensure all products remaining at the close of business are time/dated when placed in the refrigerator.
- Clean small wares/equipment throughout the day and at closing, effectively time/dating food and beverage products to ensure quality and food integrity.
- Monitor the temperature on refrigerators and freezers a minimum of three times daily (early morning, mid‑day, and late afternoon) to ensure equipment maintains the required temperature.
- Attend a 4‑hour food safety training session initially and a required annual refresher thereafter.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
No experience required. High School Graduate or Equivalent Preferred.
