Job SummaryThe Telecom Apprentice Lineman will perform overhead and underground low‑voltage line construction and maintenance involving fiber optic and copper cabling systems, as well as assist with the operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of a Lineman and/or Line Foreman. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, driving trucks, operating equipment, loading and unloading materials, climbing poles, and working from aerial personnel lift devices.
EssentialJob Functions
- Performs overhead and underground low‑voltage line construction and maintenance, as well as the operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of the assigned Line Foreman.
- Uses low‑voltage line construction equipment including, but not limited to, stringing equipment, backhoes, derrick diggers, material handlers, and trucks.
- Efficiently and safely performs line work on utility poles or from an aerial lift truck.
- Successfully climbs poles and performs assigned work in a productive manner.
- Builds strand, lashes cable and fiber, and performs basic pole transfers.
- Demonstrates familiarity with and understanding of the use of all required tools and materials.
- Maintains responsibility for verifying the condition of all vehicles, equipment, and tools provided for use in the performance of work.
- Maintains organization and cleanliness of assigned trucks, both interior and exterior.
- Stocks trucks with required materials and supplies for daily job assignments.
- Performs vehicle inspections (VIR) and checks oil and fluid levels prior to each shift.
- Loads and unloads materials.
- Maintains a strong commitment to personal safety and the safety of all crew members and individuals on the job site.
- Exercises sound judgment when responding to unusual or hazardous situations.
- Assists with record‑keeping and maintains logs of work assigned and performed, including hours categorized by activity.
- Represents TDX Corporation and BSET, LLC in a professional manner that promotes positive public relations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to pass a background check, drug and alcohol screening, motor vehicle record review, and DOT physical examination.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to distinguish colors for cable identification and termination.
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
- Willingness and ability to travel, including overnight, weekend, and extended assignments throughout Hawaii, the Pacific Basin, Alaska, and other U.S. locations as required.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Lineman school certification.
- 1–3 years of structured cabling or telecom construction experience.
- Industry certifications (as applicable).
The work environment conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. This position works primarily in the field and is exposed to all types of weather conditions, including temperature extremes and rainy environments. Outdoor settings involve all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, construction sites, and roadway rights‑of‑way.

- Works around low‑voltage wiring using insulated rubber gloves when appropriate.
- Works in confined spaces, such as underground vaults requiring entry through a manhole.
- Works in ditches up to 60 inches deep and 24 inches wide when laying underground wire.
- Frequently lifts, transports, and/or moves up to approximately 75 lbs. daily in the performance of regular duties and occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Changes positions frequently and works in awkward positions. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and descending a stepladder may also be required.
