• Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities.
• Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Responds to emergency notification on an as‑needed basis.
• Contacts private entities as required.
• Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
• Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
• Assists with surveying‑related work.
• Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
• Inspects roads while en route to and from job sites and reports problems to supervisors.
• Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
• Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
• Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
• Operates light and heavy equipment.
• Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
• Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
• Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on its use.
• Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments, addressing complex questions and troubleshooting, presenting operational updates to the supervisor, providing input on team members’ career conversations, and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

• High School Graduate or equivalent in general education.
• 5 years of roadway maintenance related work (full time or prorated part‑time equivalent).
• Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

• Valid driver’s license; must drive a state vehicle.
• Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with “N” Tank endorsement.
• Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
• Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Knowledge of applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments.
• Knowledge of incident management procedures.
• Knowledge of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
• Knowledge of maintenance contract inspection procedures.
• Ability to perform calculations, including material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data, and engineering calculations.
• Ability to lead, assign, review, and monitor the work of others.
• Ability to coordinate labor, materials, and equipment.
• Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.
