Position: Library Technician (Maud Marks Branch Library)

What began in 1921 and has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection and circulation services across Harris County.

What you will do at Harris County Public Library

Responsible for a wide array of tasks designed to ensure a smooth and enjoyable library experience for patrons. Duties include patron assistance, engaging in activities and program delivery, outreach, and maintenance of library materials. I will deliver comprehensive customer service, actively connect patrons with the information they need, and efficiently handle circulation tasks. I will support innovative library programs, demonstrating a thorough understanding of all library operations and consistently delivering an exceptional customer service experience.

This is a part‑time temporary position with an ending date of December 31, 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide customer service and manage customer accounts using the integrated library system software in the library and during outreach events.
  • Assist patrons on computers, answer phones, and assist with request for assistance.
  • Check in and deliver holds, returned items, and new items.
  • Pull expired holds, shelve returned and new items, run reports, and look for lost items on the shelves.
  • Perform basic reference service in the library and during outreach events.
  • Promote library services to the community.
  • Accurately enter data, handle sensitive customer information, and handle cash transactions.
  • Maintain and promote an engaging and attractive library collection.
  • Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences and actively serve on committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
  • High School diploma or GED equivalency.
Experience
  • One (1) year of verifiable Customer Service experience.
Additional Information
  • Available and reliable transportation for work‑related duties.
  • Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED) must be readily available upon request.
  • Candidates must complete a clerical skills test and achieve a minimum typing speed of 30 wpm with at least 80% accuracy.

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Cash handling practices ensuring accountability and accuracy.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a discreet and effective manner.

  • Proficient with the internet and Office 365.
  • Must use personal mobile device for the multifactor authentication process.

Physical Demands
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying. Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 40 pounds.

    Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager, or Library Technician Supervisor.
