Harris County Public Library (HCPL) has grown from a small collection of libraries in 1921 to a system of 26 branch buildings and additional service centers. The Library Technician supports library patrons through assistance, outreach, and maintenance of library materials, ensuring smooth operations and an exceptional customer service experience.
Duties and Responsibilities- Provide customer service and manage customer accounts using the integrated library system in the library and during outreach events.
- Assist patrons on computers, answer phones, and respond to assistance requests.
- Check in and deliver holds, returned items, and new items.
- Pull expired holds, shelve returned and new items, run reports, and locate lost items on the shelves.
- Provide basic reference service in the library and during outreach events.
- Promote library services to the community.
- Accurately enter data, handle sensitive customer information, and process cash transactions.
- Maintain and promote an engaging and attractive library collection.
- Attend staff meetings, activities, and professional conferences, and actively serve on committees.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- One (1) year of verifiable customer service experience.
- Available and reliable transportation for work‑related duties.
- Documentary evidence of high school graduation or GED upon request.
- Must complete a clerical skills test achieving a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute with at least 80 percent accuracy.
- Principles of customer service promoting positive partnerships and public relations.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment.
- Ability to work well with public and staff members.
- Cash handling practices ensuring accountability and accuracy.
- Experience working with diverse cultural and ethnic groups discreetly and effectively.
- Proficiency with social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
- Proficiency with the Internet and Office 365.
- Use of personal mobile device for multifactor authentication process.
- Bilingual (preferred).
This role typically operates in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. At times, work may be performed outdoors with possible exposure to inclement weather or temperature changes. The position may involve interaction with dangerous or aggressive populations.
Physical DemandsSitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, and lifting. Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 40 pounds.
Reporting RelationshipsReports to Branch Manager, Assistant Branch Manager, or Library Technician Supervisor. No direct supervisory responsibilities.
