Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Duty Days: 187 Days

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: IS04

Updated: 06/2025

Position Type: Full-Time

Qualifications:

  • College hours for Title I campus: 48 required or a score of 464 on the Para Pro test
  • College hours: 15, high school diploma or GED (with passing score on Para Pro) for Non-Title I campus
  • Valid Texas Educational Aide II certificate required once employed
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Valid CPI certification preferred (can be obtained after employment)

Primary

Purpose:

Instructional and student-care duties as assigned.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Adhere to federal, state and local policies and procedures related to special education aides.
  • Participate in planned in-services and professional growth activities.
  • Assist in carrying out the instructional program.
  • Assist in data collection.
  • Assist in preparation, use and maintenance of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises and drills.
  • Assist when needed in helping students in self-care activities such as toileting.
  • Assist in implementing the adaptive behavior protocol.
  • Attend professional meetings as required.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Physically prompt students through instruction which may require lifting and positioning.
  • Other SHARS duties as assigned.
  • Provide personal care as identified in the applicable student IEPs.
Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, and pulling; occasional running, heavy lifting and carrying 45 pounds and over daily, positioning of students, moving classroom or adaptive equipment, noise exposure, biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; exposure to physical and verbal outbursts by students. May be required to utilize CPI strategies to manage disruptive students, including restraint.
