Job OverviewThe school counselor uses leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to meet students’ developmental, educational, and social‑emotional needs while supporting school staff. The guidance and counseling program consists of four components:
Guidance Curriculum, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support.
- Provide large and small group guidance lessons, including classroom guidance.
- Conduct small student counseling groups to address specific needs.
- Coordinate peer programs by selecting, instructing, and supervising students serving as peer mentors.
- Assist students in exploring, selecting, and following through on educational, career, and personal goals.
- Use self‑assessment tools, inventories, interviews, and other methods to help students understand their interests and characteristics.
- Conduct group counseling sessions for students experiencing difficulties with normal developmental tasks.
- Provide empathetic individual counseling to identify problems, causes, solutions, and appropriate actions.
- Consult with parents, teachers, school personnel, and community agencies to address and resolve student concerns.
- Maintain current information on self‑exploration, post‑secondary, and career resources, and provide referrals.
- Develop the campus counseling program by assessing needs and designing responsive interventions.
- Collect and analyze data to evaluate program effectiveness and suggest changes.
- Plan and implement staff development related to counseling and social‑emotional learning.
- Develop materials for staff, classroom guidance, and group counseling sessions.
- Plan and lead guidance programs for parents.
- Provide high‑quality customer service to support students and promote the counseling program.
- Master’s degree in counselor education.
- Valid Texas counseling certificate.
- Minimum three years classroom teaching experience.
- Knowledge of counseling theories, ethics, and school counseling procedures, including student appraisal and career development.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
Maintain emotional control under stress; moderate lifting may be required.
Equipment UsedInteractive white board, computer, printer, copier, overhead projector, DVD/VCR, cellular phone, and other emerging technologies.
Position TypeFull‑time, exempt, Pay Grade I01.
