Role Description

The Community Volunteer - Librarian role is an on-site volunteer position based in Katy, TX. The volunteer will help organize, catalog, and maintain library materials to ensure community members can easily access books, educational resources, and support materials. Day-to-day tasks may include shelving and arranging materials, creating and updating metadata and classification records, assisting visitors with locating resources, and providing basic library instruction or guidance on using the collection.

The role may also involve supporting small group learning activities, promoting a welcoming and inclusive space, and collaborating with staff and volunteers to improve library services for families and children.

Qualifications
  • Ability to provide or support core Library Services, including organizing collections and assisting patrons in accessing resources.
  • Foundational understanding of Library Science principles and Metadata practices for cataloging and classifying materials.
  • Experience or interest in Library Management, such as maintaining records, managing circulation processes, or overseeing small sections of a collection.
  • Capacity to offer Library Instruction, including basic guidance on using library resources, search tools, and educational materials.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and comfort working with both physical and digital information.
  • Commitment to inclusion, respect, and confidentiality when working with diverse community members, including children and families.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with staff and other volunteers.
  • Interest in community service; prior volunteer or community engagement experience is beneficial.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; coursework or experience in libraries, education, or social services is an asset.
