Position Summary
DXP Enterprises, Inc. is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Electrical Engineering Intern to join its Control, Electrical & Instrumentation (CE&I) Group. This internship provides a unique, hands-on opportunity to participate in real engineering projects within the Oil & Gas, Chemical Processing, and Industrial sectors.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of a licensed Control, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer and will be responsible for developing electrical and instrumentation wiring diagrams for process skids, interpreting engineering documentation, applying hazardous area classification requirements, and generating technical deliverables in compliance with applicable industry standards.
This role is designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional engineering practice, providing the intern with direct exposure to engineering design workflows, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and project lifecycle management in an industrial environment.
Responsibilities
* Interpret, review, and extract relevant information from Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) including instrument tags, process connections, control loops, and skid battery limits.
* Identify and classify instruments, control signals (4-20 mA, discrete I/O, HART, Fieldbus), and equipment within the scope of assigned skid packages.
* Apply applicable electrical and industrial standards throughout the design process, including NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 79, ISA 5.1, ISA 5.4, IEC 60079, and API RP 505 for hazardous area classification.
* Develop point-to-point wiring diagrams (P2P) from scratch, clearly showing terminal-to-terminal connections between field instruments, junction boxes, marshaling panels, and control systems (DCS/PLC).
* Select cables, conduit, and accessories appropriate for the service conditions and area classification, including cable types (instrument cable, shielded twisted pair, power cable), cable sizing, and routing considerations.
* Generate and maintain a complete Bill of Materials (BOM) for the electrical and instrumentation scope of the skid, including cable schedule, instrument list cross-references, and material quantities.
* Participate in P&w sessions, contributing to markup reviews and design verification activities.
* Develop and maintain technical documentation including instrument datasheets for simpler instruments, wiring schedules, cable lists, and termination lists.
* Provide engineering support during Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), including verification of wiring against diagrams, instrument loop checks, and panel inspection activities.
* Learn and apply drafting software tools used by the CE&I Group for the development of electrical and instrumentation drawings (AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent).
Qualifications
* Currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor of Science program in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
* Minimum completion of sophomore year (60+ credit hours) preferred. Junior and Senior students are strongly encouraged to apply.
* Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale preferred.
* Foundational knowledge of electrical circuits, DC/AC theory, and basic electronics.
* Understanding of electrical safety principles and awareness of hazardous area concepts.
* Basic proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent CAD drafting software, intermediate or advanced level is a plus.
* Knowledge of industrial instrumentation (transmitters, sensors, control valves) is desirable but not required.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
* Ability to read, interpret, and work with complex engineering documents and drawings.
* Clear written and verbal communication skills in English, ability to prepare technical reports and present findings.
* Self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
* Team player with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, designers, and project managers.
Professional Development Opportunities
Beyond the technical scope, this internship is designed to develop well-rounded engineering professionals. The intern…
