Job Description Job Description P& Systems Designer / Engineer
We are looking for a senior P& execution professional who can review engineering information before drafting begins, identify incomplete or conflicting engineering direction, and help the team prevent rework before it enters production.
This is not a supervisor, standards owner, or administrative role. The role is focused on engineering completeness reviews, Bluebeam markup quality, utility P&t, vendor document review, P& integrity, and early identification of design gaps.
The right person can explain why a markup is not engineering-complete, what decisions are missing, and what questions must be resolved before the drawing can be responsibly updated.
Employment path:This position will begin as a contract assignment with the opportunity to become direct, provided there is a strong mutual fit for both client and the candidate.
Rate approach:Pay rate will be based on experience level, demonstrated technical judgment, systems thinking, review capability, and total contribution to project execution.
Candidate Behaviors We Are Targeting- Reviews engineering markups for completeness before drafting work begins.
- Identifies missing decisions, conflicting comments, and unclear design direction early.
- Analyzes Bluebeam markups and transforms ambiguous review comments into specific, actionable engineering questions or drafting instructions that can be executed without additional clarification
- Understands how process, piping, instrumentation, electrical, controls, procurement, vendor data, and construction are connected.
- Can develop utility P&IDs from engineering intent, not only from marked-up drawings.
- Recognizes when a drawing looks correct, but the underlying data is incomplete or disconnected.
- Challenges assumptions respectfully when engineering inputs are not complete enough to execute.
- Find design gaps before they become RFIs, vendor confusion, field questions, or late project rework.
- Communicates clearly with engineers and designers without taking over their decision rights.
- Works as a senior technical contributor, not as a supervisor or manager.
- 10+ years of P&n, process systems, utility systems, or P& review experience.
- Strong P&t experience in EPC, petrochemical, gas processing, utility, or industrial project environments.
- Experience reviewing engineering comments, Bluebeam markups, vendor drawings, and controlled project references.
- Ability to build or develop utility P&IDs from design basis, process direction, equipment information, and project standards.
- Strong understanding of line numbering, valve tagging, equipment interfaces, instrumentation, controls, tie-ins, utilities, and package boundaries.
- Experience identifying conflicts between project P&IDs, vendor documents, data lists, and engineering markups.
- Familiarity with intelligent P&, drawing attributes, connected information, and downstream data impacts.
- Proven ability to explain why engineering information is incomplete and what must be resolved before execution.
Senior P& Systems Designer / Engineer
Advanced technical review capability, strong systems thinking, independent issue identification, and ability to develop utility P&IDs from engineering intent.
Prevents rework by identifying incomplete engineering direction, vendor conflicts, data integrity issues, and design gaps before production begins.
What Success Looks Like- Engineering markups are reviewed for completeness before drafting starts.
- Incomplete comments are returned with clear, useful questions instead of being interpreted by assumption.
- Utility P&IDs are developed with enough technical detail to support design, review, procurement, and construction needs.
- Vendor document conflicts are identified early and escalated with specific impact statements.
- Connected P& is more accurate, consistent, and useful for downstream systems.
- Common sources of RFIs, late changes, and rework are identified earlier in the project lifecycle.
- Engineers and designers have better visibility for missing decisions, unclear scope, and unresolved interfaces.
- The team spends less time reacting to incomplete information and more time executing controlled work.
