Position: Registered Nurse II -LTAC ICU, (KATY)

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse, an experienced clinician who functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice. The RN II provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducts nursing assessments, assists with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care efficiently, addressing patients with varied and complex needs, and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes.

The RN II demonstrates clinical competence by using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, while acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights. This role assumes leadership responsibilities, including but not limited to participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor to students or new employees, and contributing to service line or hospital‑wide initiatives in partnership with management.

Education
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
Experience
  • Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing/PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications
  • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
  • NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI).
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform essential functions, especially where patient or employee safety is concerned.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus and positive language principles.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills, evidenced by the capacity to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Functions independently, exercising judgment in interactions with physicians, the interprofessional care team, and patients and their families.
  • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient in time management.
  • Maintains professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook.
People Essential Functions
  • Uses therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team, collaborating on the plan of care.
  • Enriches teamwork by recognizing overall unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for assistance; fosters healthy work relationships; seeks and offers guidance as appropriate; and applies feedback to improve patient outcomes.
  • Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors other staff and students (including preceptorship). Uses peer‑to‑peer accountability to improve departmental score for turnover/retention/employee engagement on the unit‑based scorecard.
