QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION
  • Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Certifications, Licenses and Registrations section.
EXPERIENCE
  • Twenty-four months of clinical nursing experience with progressive leadership skills.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Required
  • RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing (PSV Compact Licensure). Must obtain a permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency).
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months.
  • NIHSTROKE – National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months.
Preferred
  • Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
  • NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI).
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
  • Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English, particularly for patient or employee safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, families, and co-workers in a customer‑service focused manner.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with the capacity to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Functions independently and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians and the interprofessional team.
  • Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates proficient time‑management skills.
  • Highly developed assessment skills; contributes to policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of the Nursing Unit’s Dashboard and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.
  • Proficient in operating the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains a level of professional contribution as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS People Essential Functions
  • Fosters staff engagement through active listening, feedback, equitable decisions, and support for organizational goals. Proactively offers assistance and models inter‑professional communication, including stress management support. Improves departmental turnover/retention on unit‑based scorecard.
  • Role models fair and consistent leadership for team dynamics and building strategies through problem solving, coaching, and staff development. Coaches staff on effective communication and patient and family inclusion in care plans. Provides input into staff performance reviews as appropriate.
  • Functions as a mentor and resource to unit staff, overseeing students, new employees, and preceptorships. Identifies organizational conflicts and applies tools to resolve concerns with patients, families, physicians, and the team.
Service Essential Functions
  • Leads patient and family‑centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Mentors others regarding specialty populations; audits care plans. Practices culturally diverse and inclusive care.
  • Maintains ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care through leader rounding. Ensures collaboration with other departments on patient process issues.
  • Drives department service standards to improve unit‑based patient satisfaction scores through role modeling and accountability.
Quality / Safety Essential Functions
  • Models standards of care related to the nursing process, actively participating in improving nurse‑sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals.
  • Coordinates nursing care throughout the shift, considering patient acuity, staff skill level, and safety to meet patient care duties. Models regulatory and professional practice standards.
  • Facilitates seamless patient flow and leads delivery of quality family‑centered care across the continuum. Ensures accurate, timely care plans and coaches staff on documentation deficiencies.
