At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN Med/Surg position is a licensed staff nurse with experience in patient care. The role functions at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner's model of clinical practice and provides professional nursing care to a diverse patient population. Responsibilities include conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records.
The RN PRN Med/Surg communicates and collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and maintain compassionate, efficient, quality care and achieve desired treatment outcomes.
- Provide direct patient care effectively and efficiently, including patients with varied and complex needs.
- Use technology, administer medications, perform procedures, and manage emergencies, acting as a patient and family advocate to monitor and maintain patient rights.
- Assume leadership roles: serve as charge nurse or preceptor, participate in unit and shared governance initiatives, and contribute to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in partnership with management.
- Utilize therapeutic communication, active listening, and teaching to establish relationships with patients, families, and the health‑care team and collaborate on the plan of care.
- Contribute to teamwork by offering assistance based on unit acuity, fostering healthy relationships, and applying feedback to improve patient outcomes.
- Implement staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coach and mentor other staff and students.
- Follow patient and family-centered care standards, conduct nursing assessments, assist with exams and treatment, and maintain accurate medical records.
- Develop, update, and communicate care plans, prioritize care, advocate for patients and families, and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
- Provide patient teaching, evaluate comprehension, and adapt methods accordingly to support post-discharge care.
- Drive improvement of department satisfaction and quality scores through peer-to-peer accountability and quality/safety initiatives.
- Graduate of an approved education program for the required credential(s).
- Minimum two years of registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment.
- Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent (required). - Licenses and Certifications (required):
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure (Texas Board of Nursing) – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency.
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association.
- Preferred:
Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification.
- Demonstrate skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned duties through ongoing assessments.
- Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English as required for patient or employee safety.
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers using a customer-service focus and positive language principles.
- Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills with capacity to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with the health-care team and patients.
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment per the Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficient time-management skills and maintain professional contributions as defined in the Clinical Career Path program guide.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook.
- Follow standards of care related to the nursing process, regulatory requirements, and professional practice.
- Identify and implement areas for practice improvement with research-based evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes.
- Coordinate patient care with the interprofessional team, using evidence-based analytical approaches.
- Improve quality and safety scores through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration with the health‑care team.
