Description
:

Prepares and performs experiments under the direction of a supervisor. Maintains lab equipment and may perform basic repairs. Prepares initial reports based on results.

  • Prepares and performs experiments.
  • Maintains lab equipment by cleaning and performing basic repairs, contacts supervisor for more complicated repairs.
  • Prepares initial reports and/or mathematical models based on experimental results.
  • Notifies supervisor of unusual deviations in or during experiments.
  • May maintain inventory of supplies.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • This position will support microbiology and anatomy & physiology laboratory class courses on the UH-Katy campus. The lab technician will be responsible for coordinating supply orders, general laboratory maintenance, preparation of the classroom for class, and preparing all samples, reagents, and cultures needed for the lab courses. The lab technician will also be responsible for clean‑up of the lab classroom and proper disposal of all lab waste.

    The lab technician will work closely with the instructors for the relevant courses, ensuring labs run smoothly.

    Job functions include:

  • Working closely with the course instructors to ensure lab courses flow smoothly throughout the semester.
  • Maintain the inventory and handle supply orders.
  • Ensure all materials are properly and safely stored in the laboratory.
  • Prepare cultures, stock solutions, and aliquots of reagents needed for class.
  • Properly dispose of all lab waste following all EPA and OSHA standards.
  • Wash, store, and autoclave glassware and other lab equipment.
  • Maintain the equipment and organize repairs as needed. Instrumentation may include spectrophotometers, microscopes, shakers, incubators, and micropipettors, etc.
  • Track lab budget expenditures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Employment covers the week before classes begin, through the semester, and the week after classes end for both the fall and spring semesters.

    MQ: Requires the ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures, policies and practices attainable through specific education and/or training programs in a specialty or technical field. Advanced vocational or electronic skills or a basic knowledge of a professional field is required. An Associate's degree or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of over 18 months and up to 3 years duration are characteristic of this field.

    No experience is required.
